Johannesburg — Emergency services in Johannesburg have been placed on high alert as heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are forecast for the city from Friday into the weekend.
The warning follows an alert from the South African Weather Service that storms moving across parts of the country could bring intense downpours, strong winds and the risk of localised flooding.
According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, teams across the city are monitoring conditions closely and preparing to respond to possible weather-related incidents.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said emergency units, disaster management monitoring teams and the city’s Swift Water Rescue Unit have been deployed across all seven regions.
“EMS units remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions for any emergencies which might occur,” Mulaudzi said.
Residents have been urged to take precautions during the stormy weather, particularly those living in low-lying areas where flash flooding is more likely. Authorities warned people not to cross flooded roads, bridges or river streams, as water levels can rise quickly during heavy rainfall.
Faith-based groups have also been advised to avoid conducting baptism or cleansing rituals in rivers during the rainy period to reduce the risk of people being swept away by strong currents.
Forecasters say a band of tropically sourced rainfall is expected to move across parts of southern Africa over the coming days, bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms to several provinces including Gauteng. Some storms could become severe, with heavy downpours increasing the risk of localised flooding.
Authorities are urging motorists to drive cautiously, increase following distances and remain alert for flooded roads and reduced visibility during the storms.
