Eldorado Park, Johannesburg – Armoured vehicles rolled into Eldorado Park on Wednesday as soldiers from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were deployed to assist local law enforcement in tackling rising crime in the area.
The deployment follows a directive from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who authorised SANDF support for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in response to an increase in violent organised crime across Gauteng.
The military presence is aimed at supporting SAPS operations against heavily armed criminal gangs, illegal mining syndicates, and other violent activities threatening the safety of communities. Soldiers will operate under police command, with specific rules of engagement and defined, time-limited objectives.
Ward 18 councillor Juwairiya Kaldine confirmed the arrival of SANDF units, noting the community’s longstanding call for stronger crime-fighting measures. "The army has officially arrived in. Thank you, Minister Gayton Mckenzie," she said.
However, only the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the legal authority to deploy the SANDF within civilian areas. Ministers cannot independently authorise military interventions in communities.
During the deployment, soldiers are expected to assist in high-risk operations, secure critical infrastructure, and free police officers to focus on investigations, arrests, and building cases that can lead to prosecutions.
President Ramaphosa outlined the necessity of the move during the State of the Nation Address earlier this year, highlighting that the SANDF will operate in coordination with SAPS, rather than independently.
The Eldorado Park deployment marks the latest step in the government’s efforts to curb violent crime and improve public safety in Gauteng, a province that has seen a notable surge in organised criminal activity in recent months.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement during the operations, assuring the public that the military presence is a temporary, targeted measure.
