10 Teens Rescued in Joburg CBD as Human Trafficking Suspect Arrested

A 47-year-old man has been arrested on charges of human trafficking following the rescue of ten teenage boys in the Johannesburg CBD.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Katlego Mogale said metro police officers were alerted on Tuesday after eight semi-clothed teenage boys were seen walking along Broad Street in Mulbarton.

“Officers were also informed that two additional boys had already been taken away in a blue VW Jetta,” she said.

The vehicle was later spotted and stopped in the area, but the driver tried to flee. He was caught in Commissioner Street.

During the arrest, the remaining two teenagers were rescued.

Mogale confirmed that all ten teenagers are foreign nationals who do not speak English. Their countries of origin are still being verified.

The suspect, who is also a foreign national, is expected to appear in the Booysens Magistrates’ Court on Thursday on charges of illegal immigration and alleged trafficking in persons.
