Residents across several Johannesburg communities are being warned to prepare for significant water supply disruptions as Rand Water undertakes planned maintenance on its Eikenhof System early next week.
According to Rand Water and Johannesburg Water, the maintenance is scheduled to begin at 04:00 on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, and is expected to conclude by 08:00 on Thursday, 8 January 2026. The work will affect multiple reservoirs and direct supply areas across the city, with low pressure or no water anticipated in some suburbs during this period.

Alternative Water Supply and Recovery Time
Johannesburg Water has indicated that water tankers will be deployed to provide alternative supply where possible during the maintenance period. However, residents are cautioned that demand may exceed availability in some areas.
Authorities further warn that full system recovery could take between three and five days after the maintenance work is completed, meaning intermittent supply issues may persist beyond 8 January.
Advice to Residents and Businesses
Residents are urged to:
Store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown
Use water sparingly during and after the maintenance period
Harvest rainwater where possible
Businesses, particularly those dependent on continuous water supply, are advised to ensure adequate on-site water storage to minimise disruption.
Johannesburg Water says the planned maintenance is necessary to ensure long-term system reliability and stability, and has apologised for the inconvenience caused.
Joburg News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the maintenance progresses.
