Motorists across Gauteng are being urged to brace for significant road closures, diversions and delays as the G20 Leaders’ Summit prepares to kick off this week.
According to Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the restrictions won’t be limited to Joburg — Tshwane and Ekurhuleni will also be affected as international delegations move between key sites, airports and secure zones.
Major Highways Impacted
National and regional routes due for closures or rolling restrictions include:
-

Full Closures Begin 19 November
Fihla said Golden Highway will be completely closed between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway from 19 November.
Further closures intensify on 22 and 23 November, including:
-
Nasrec Road (Rand Show Rd → Shaft 17 Rd)
-
Northern Rand Show Road (N1 → Nasrec Rd)
-
Booysens Reserve Road (limited access)
Traffic flow will also be re-engineered — with sections of Nasrec Road turned into dual carriageways to allow vehicles in and out of Omonde View.
“We expect this to happen between 7:30am and 10am,” said Fihla.
Motorists Urged to Plan Ahead
With the G20 bringing world leaders, convoys, and tightened security, drivers are encouraged to:
-
Use alternative routes
-
Avoid high-risk zones
-
Expect sudden or rolling closures
-
Allow more travel time
-
Use public transport where possible
The closures are likely to impact schools, businesses, deliveries, and commuters across the province.
Public Frustration Grows
With load shedding, water outages, and now major traffic disruptions, some Joburg residents have expressed frustration on social media — while others see the summit as a chance for global investment and visibility.
Joburg News will continue providing live updates, route guidance, and any changes communicated by authorities.
