Joburg Is Getting A New Library

Johannesburg is set to get a fresh hub for readers and learners as a new community library opens its doors at the vibrant Victoria Yards precinct.

Bridge Books, one of the city’s most loved independent bookstores, announced plans to launch a container library at the cultural hotspot. The official opening is scheduled for 4 December 2025, with the space already undergoing preparations.

“Work is well underway – the librarian is busy shelving and organizing books, covering them, and sorting all the details to ensure the space is ready for the public,” said Bridge Books owner Griffin Shea.

The project is backed by Gearhouse, a nearby state-of-the-art equipment and technical solutions company, which is sponsoring the librarian. Additional support comes from Chabad House, known for running educational programmes across South African schools.

Unlike previous Chabad House initiatives that mainly focused on schools, this library is designed to serve the broader community. “This is the first time the programme is creating a space meant to be a community hub rather than attached to a specific school,” Shea explained.

The library aims to foster reading, learning, and storytelling, particularly highlighting African writers. Bridge Books plans to work with after-school programmes and nearby schools to ensure children without access to school libraries can benefit.

“We want this space to become a hub for learning and creativity in the area, complementing the great work already happening at Victoria Yards,” Shea added.

Johannesburg residents and visitors can look forward to a space that combines culture, education, and community engagement—a true addition to the city’s growing cultural landscape.
