Johannesburg Water announces major planned outages affecting multiple regions

Thousands of Johannesburg residents will experience water supply interruptions this week as Johannesburg Water carries out planned maintenance projects across three regions between 11 and 17 November 2025.

The utility says the work — which includes infrastructure assessments, valve installations and tie-in work — is part of a broader effort to improve service reliability and reduce water losses in the city.

Region B: Longest disruption expected

The most extensive maintenance will affect Region B, where several suburbs will experience reduced water pressure to complete outages for nearly a week.

According to Johannesburg Water, the disruption began on 11 November at 9am and will continue until 17 November at 4pm.

“Reduced pressure to no flows due to a dummy test of the bypass system,” the utility stated, noting that the test is essential to assess the condition of the bypass line.

Although no formal water tankers have been stationed in the area, Johannesburg Water said residents will be assisted “as and when necessary.”

The affected suburbs include:
Cresta, Jacanlee, Robindale, Robindale Ext 4, Robin Hills, Darrenwood, Aldara Park, Randpark Ext 2–5, Windsor West, and Windsor Glen.

All streets within these areas are expected to experience reduced pressure or no water during the maintenance period.

Region F: CBD and inner-city areas to be hit this weekend

Central Johannesburg, including the CBD and surrounding areas, will face water interruptions from Thursday, 14 November at 12pm until Saturday, 16 November at 8pm.

The work involves installing valves at the bypass chamber and pump station, as well as tie-in work required to maintain long-term supply stability.

Areas affected include Johannesburg CBD, Newtown, Selby, Jeppestown, and Doorfontein, where residents can expect low pressure or no water for two days.

Johannesburg Water said the maintenance will “improve service delivery, ensure continuity of supply, and reduce unaccounted-for water.”

Region A: One-day outage in the north

Residents in Region A’s northern suburbs — including parts of Riversands and Kleve A.H. — will experience a complete water outage on Wednesday, 13 November from 9am to 4pm.

The utility said the shutdown is necessary to commission new water infrastructure.

Affected areas include:
Riversands Primary, Riverside View Ext 13, 15, 36–42, 59, 80–83, 90–91, Kleve A.H., and Riversands Farm Village.

Water supply points will be available at:

  • Corner of School Road & Riversands Boulevard

  • Corner of Rose Road & Riversands Boulevard

  • Corner of Caracal Road & Riversands Boulevard

Johannesburg Water: “Short-term pain for long-term gain”

Johannesburg Water has urged residents in all affected regions to store sufficient water in advance and use water sparingly during the disruptions.

“These maintenance projects are essential for improved service delivery, continuity of water supply, and infrastructure reliability across Johannesburg,” the utility said.

The city has experienced multiple water interruptions in recent months, prompting calls for long-term investment in water infrastructure. Johannesburg Water maintains that the planned maintenance is part of an ongoing programme to stabilise supply and reduce the frequency of unplanned outages.
