Johannesburg – In a significant shift within the African National Congress (ANC) regional leadership, Loyiso Masuku has defeated Dada Morero to become the new chairperson of the ANC’s Johannesburg Region. The outcome was confirmed on Friday following a closely watched regional elective conference, drawing strong interest across Gauteng’s political landscape.
Masuku’s victory marks a notable political comeback. She previously served as Johannesburg MMC for Corporate and Shared Services before stepping back from active city leadership amid allegations that were later withdrawn. Her re-emergence as regional chair signals renewed confidence from ANC delegates who backed her as the candidate they believe can stabilise the party’s largest and most strategically important region.
Morero, who served as the outgoing regional chair and Mayor of the city of Joburg, had been widely seen as the establishment favourite. His loss represents a major upset, given his long-standing influence within the region and his role in internal coalition negotiations that have shaped the city’s turbulent political environment.
In her acceptance remarks, Masuku committed to rebuilding organisational trust, improving grassroots mobilisation, and strengthening the ANC’s credibility ahead of the next municipal election cycle. She emphasised unity within the region, saying the party "must prioritise service delivery and reconnect with communities across Johannesburg."
Political analysts say Masuku’s leadership could reshape internal power dynamics within Gauteng, particularly as the ANC grapples with coalition politics, declining urban support, and pressure to regain control of Johannesburg.
The ANC is expected to outline its next steps for the region in the coming days, including appointments to key portfolios within the regional executive committee.
The contest between Masuku and Morero was reported live by Newzroom405, where conference delegates celebrated Masuku’s win as results were announced.
Joburg News will continue monitoring developments within the ANC Johannesburg Region as new leadership structures take shape.
